Residents in central Tehran said they could see and hear heavy strikes, while Israel said it was defending itself from an attack. Earlier, President Trump suggested that a new government could take over in Tehran.

After hitting Iran’s most heavily fortified nuclear installation, President Trump warned of more strikes “if peace does not come quickly.” Iranian ballistic missiles wounded at least 10 in Israel, officials said.

President Trump has said there is little he could do to stop the Israeli attacks. A European diplomatic effort to rein in the hostilities ended without a breakthrough on Friday.

European officials, who have been effectively sidelined in the war between Israel and Iran, will try to exert limited leverage in a meeting with Iranian officials on Friday in Geneva.

Iran struck the largest hospital in southern Israel, the Israeli military said. President Trump has offered no timetable on deciding whether to order U.S. forces to join attacks on Iran’s nuclear sites.

Evidence continued to grow that the United States was considering joining Israel’s bombing campaign. Israel’s latest attacks followed two rounds of Iranian missiles fired into Israel.

President Trump left the summit in Canada as the Israeli-Iranian conflict entered a fifth day. He had resisted signing an earlier draft of the G7 statement.

Israel’s military said it had struck the headquarters of the Quds Force, which reports directly to Iran’s supreme leader. The claim could not be immediately confirmed.

Israel also attacked Iran’s defense ministry’s headquarters, while Iran fired missiles at Israel, in the most direct and prolonged attacks between the rivals ever.
